Ultra-Rare Pikachu Pokémon Card Sells for $660,000

An exceptionally rare Pikachu card, originally created as a prize for an illustration competition, has achieved a record-breaking sale of $660,000 at auction. The card, known as the "Pokémon Art Academy" Lily-Chan Pikachu, was one of only 100 copies produced for the winning artist.

This particular card was featured in Fanatics Collect's October 18 Weekly auction, attracting 55 bids. The final price of $660,000 includes the buyer's premium. This sale follows another significant auction result for a similar card from the same competition; a Pikachu card featuring artwork by Y. Fujishima sold for $8.4 million recently.

The Value of Lily-Chan's Pikachu

The rarity of the Lily-Chan Pikachu card stems from its origin as a promotional item for the 2015 Pokémon Art Academy illustration competition. Players submitted artwork, and winning entries were turned into official Pokémon TCG cards, with the artists receiving 100 copies each. Lily-Chan, an artist from Spain, created an illustration of Pikachu in an elaborate winter outfit, making the Spanish-language card a unique piece of Pokémon history.

According to PSA's population report, only eight Gem Mint 10 examples of this specific card are currently listed, underscoring its scarcity.

Surging Collectible Prices

The value of the Lily-Chan Pikachu has seen a dramatic increase. In May 2019, a PSA 10 graded copy sold for $1,276. By May 2020, that price had risen to $2,826. The recent $660,000 sale represents an exponential growth in value over a seven-year period.

Another Art Academy Pikachu card, featuring artwork by British contest winner Meli, also sold for $660,000 just a week prior to the Lily-Chan sale. This indicates a strong market demand for these unique promotional cards, regardless of the specific artwork or attire featured on Pikachu.

The trend of high-value Pokémon collectibles extends beyond the Art Academy series. Recently, three rare Pokémon cards from the Southern Islands set collectively sold for over $1.1 million, and a PSA 10 Aquapolis Crystal Lugia reached $360,000 in a separate auction. These sales highlight a broader surge in the market for high-end Pokémon collectibles, with unique items originating from events like the Art Academy competition now commanding significant prices.
