The Super Nintendo's rich library of role-playing games, including acclaimed titles like Final Fantasy 4 and 6, EarthBound, and Chrono Trigger, often overshadows many other gems. Among these lesser-known titles is Terranigma, an action-RPG developed by Quintet and published by Enix. Originally released in Japan in 1995 and later in Europe and Australia in 1996, Terranigma never saw a North American release due to the closure of Enix's U.S. subsidiary before its planned localization.

This will finally change next year with the announcement of Terranigma — Rebirth, a remaster developed by Clear River Games. Terranigma stands as the final entry in Quintet's unofficial trilogy, which also includes Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia. The game casts players as Ark, a young boy tasked with saving his village and restoring a decaying world after a mysterious curse is unleashed.

Terranigma is noted for its visually impressive pixel art, characteristic of its era, and a narrative that intertwines fantasy RPG elements with an early environmentalist theme, predating Final Fantasy 7's similar messaging. Despite its cult following, the game is also known for a significant difficulty spike.

While specific details on the remaster's enhancements are scarce, Clear River Games has indicated that Terranigma — Rebirth will focus on quality-of-life improvements and bonus features. Unlike Square Enix's recent trend of remaking classics with its HD-2D engine, this remaster is expected to preserve the game's original pixel art style.

Terranigma — Rebirth is slated for release in early 2027. It will be available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
