Unity has achieved a significant milestone in cross-engine compatibility, demonstrating a Unity Engine game running natively within Unreal Engine. This technical feat, showcased at the Unite Seoul keynote, aligns with Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney's ambition for a unified gaming ecosystem and potentially allows Unity developers to publish their creations within Fortnite.
During the demonstration, Unity senior director of technical product management James Stone presented a simulated Unity game rendered entirely by Unreal Engine. "What you're seeing here is a game simulated in Unity, rendered with Unreal. Now, that's not video streamed, there's no smoke and mirrors. This is all real time," Stone explained, emphasizing that the integration extends beyond mere rendering. The demo further illustrated synchronized physics, lighting, and input between the two engines, featuring an Unreal Engine character navigating a world built in Unity.
"Connect ALL the engines!" Sweeney exclaimed on social media in response to the demonstration, reinforcing his long-held vision for interoperability across platforms and games. This partnership between Unity and Epic Games is one of several initiatives aimed at connecting content, economies, and social features, a concept often referred to as "the metaverse."
Sweeney previously discussed this endeavor with PC Gamer, stating that the industry would benefit from realizing "the value of connecting is higher for everybody than remaining separate." The forthcoming integration of Unity into Fortnite is slated for early access in 2027. Concurrently, Unity announced Unity 7, the next iteration of its game engine, which is expected to introduce new features for rendering, monetization, collaboration, and a protocol for integrating generative AI coding agents.
