Unofficial Dragon Age: Origins Remaster Targeting 2027 Release

A team of developers is working on an unofficial remaster of BioWare's 2009 RPG, Dragon Age: Origins, with a planned release for 2027. The project aims to address performance issues that plague the original game on modern PCs and expand modding capabilities.

According to Dragon Age creator and producer Mark Darrah, a formal remaster by BioWare is unlikely due to the studio's unfamiliarity with the outdated Aurora Engine used for the game. This has created an opportunity for a dedicated fan community to undertake the task.

Developers have reportedly made significant progress, reaching approximately 60% completion in decompiling and modernizing the source code. This effort is intended to result in improved performance, broader modding support, and potential additions such as 64-bit compatibility, controller support, and netplay for co-op campaigns. The team aims to achieve around 90% decompilation before targeting a 2027 release. Developers have stated they do not intend to profit from this project.

This fan-driven remaster comes as official support for the Dragon Age franchise has seen shifts, with a follow-up to Dragon Age: The Veilguard reportedly unlikely. The project offers both existing fans and newcomers a chance to experience the original Dragon Age: Origins with updated technical foundations.
