An unofficial PC port of Gears of War 2, developed by xHeliosx, is now available for download. This project is based on a leaked build of the game that surfaced in early 2008.
Gears of War 2 was an Xbox 360 exclusive, with its absence on PC at the time attributed by some, including original developer Cliff Bleszinski, to concerns about software piracy. Bleszinski had publicly stated that PC gamers savvy enough to upgrade their hardware were also likely to pirate software.
This fan-made port, titled Gears of War 2: Hollow, includes the Road to Ruin DLC. Progress is saved upon chapter completion. While the multiplayer component can be attempted, its functionality is not guaranteed, as xHeliosx focused primarily on single-player testing.
The launcher for the port is available on ModDB. However, other necessary files were previously distributed via xHeliosx's Discord server, which has since been overwhelmed with requests and taken offline. Players will need to source these files from alternative locations.
Looking ahead, the next installment, Gears of War: E-Day, has been confirmed for a PC release. A Microsoft representative confirmed the platform availability when inquired about the upcoming title.
