The landscape of upcoming video games is set to welcome a diverse cast of animal and anthropomorphic characters, with multiple titles announced or highlighted recently that allow players to step into the paws, claws, or hooves of non-human protagonists. This trend was particularly evident following events like Gamescom Opening Night Live and the Future Games Show.

Among these is Amphibian, an RPG developed by Jarcorp Interactive Systems slated for release in 2028 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch. This title casts players as humanoid frogs on a mission to save their world. The game reportedly features all dialogue as ribbit sounds, with on-screen translations provided for clarity.

For a more intimate co-op experience, Bye Bye Bonnie from Brainwash Gang and Raw Fury is in development for PC. This game features four players controlling minuscule characters aboard a small ship, navigating obstacles by interacting with controls that require them to jump.

Haunted Paws, a co-op horror adventure by LazyFlock, is also on the horizon for PC and Switch. Players will control two puppies tasked with rescuing their owner from a haunted mansion. These canine protagonists demonstrate surprisingly human-like abilities, such as driving cars and playing video games, all while evading spectral threats.

Gravhounds, developed by Octopus Panic, is set to launch on November 2 for PC and Xbox Series X|S. This game leans heavily into anthropomorphic canine heroes, featuring very human-like dogs sent across the galaxy to colonize a new planet. The narrative suggests these dogs share a common goal: earning a return trip home.

Adding to the theme of genetic modification and animal traits is DNA Nemesis, a third-person shooter from Catalisol Limited and Aeternum Game Studios. Expected in December 2026 for PC, the game's player characters appear to be humans augmented with animal characteristics, some even sporting animal heads that may offer combat advantages.

Zoopunk by TiGames, planned for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, presents a polished take on anthropomorphic animals fighting against machines in a futuristic setting. The developer, TiGames, is also working on other titles.

Finally, Stray Dog: Nobody Cares, a fantasy adventure from Parry Frames Studio for PC, was announced prior to Gamescom and continues this trend. In this title, players assume the role of a sword-wielding dog on an adventure.
