The U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division is offering soldiers a four-day pass to play Grand Theft Auto 6 upon its release, provided they reenlist for a minimum of two years. This unusual "Special Reenlistment Incentive" was detailed in a memo dated July 28, which specifies that soldiers signing a reenlistment contract between August 1, 2026, and November 14, 2026, will receive the pass.
The incentive is designed to align with the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, aiming to connect with soldiers' interests and boost reenlistment numbers. Lieutenant Colonel Angel Tomko explained that the program was conceived by a battalion career counselor who proposed a creative incentives program to meet fiscal year 2027 reenlistment goals. Eligible soldiers must commit to at least two, and up to six years, of service.
While not an Army-wide initiative, this program is unique to the 3rd Infantry Division, specifically within the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion. According to Lt. Col. Tomko, the offer has already seen some success, with 20 soldiers out of 130 eligible in the battalion opting for the incentive. Tomko emphasized that reenlistment incentives are standard practice in the Army, intended to reward soldiers and retain talent, with units often tailoring these incentives to their specific formations.
This incentive is described as an administrative bonus layered on top of standard reenlistment benefits, which can include time off, financial rewards, or preferred duty locations, depending on a soldier's Military Occupational Specialty and service needs. The response among eligible soldiers has been overwhelmingly positive, according to Tomko, who stated that the incentive's purpose is to reward dedicated service, not to change the program's intention despite external reactions.
The Army has a history of engaging with video games for recruitment and retention. This includes the debut of the "America's Army" shooter series in 2002 and the establishment of an Army esports team in 2018, which operates as part of its Marketing and Engagement Brigade and maintains an active presence on platforms like Twitch. The current GTA 6 incentive is seen as a creative extension of these efforts to boost morale and encourage career conversations among service members.
