Valor Mortis, a New Soulslike, Blends Dark Souls and BioShock for a Brutal PS5 Experience

Valor Mortis, an upcoming action game from Polish developer One More Level, promises a brutal experience for PlayStation 5 owners. The game draws heavily from both Dark Souls and BioShock, merging challenging combat mechanics with a first-person perspective and supernatural abilities. Players will step into the shoes of William Dowsett, a soldier who finds himself in a horrifying reality where his former comrades have been transformed into monstrous beings.

A conspiracy and a devastating Crimson Plague threaten humanity, driving William's desperate fight for survival. The narrative features a notable voice cast, including Vincent Cassel as Napoleon and James Alexander as William. The game's first-person perspective, akin to BioShock, allows players to wield a variety of powers, including offensive spells like a burst of fire and defensive measures such as a blocking shield. Mobility is also key, with abilities enabling wall-running and grappling to distant platforms, preventing the gameplay from becoming monotonous.

Combat in Valor Mortis emphasizes fast-paced, brutal encounters. Players will engage in visceral melee combat, featuring severed limbs and bloody blades, alongside gunplay and supernatural powers. Stamina management is crucial, requiring players to master parries, dashes, and finishing moves to overcome both monstrous humanoids and nightmarish creatures. The game aims to capture the challenging nature of Soulslike titles while offering a unique blend of mechanics.

Upon defeating enemies and bosses, players will collect 'Catalysts.' These can be used at designated 'lanterns,' functioning similarly to bonfires in Dark Souls, to unlock and upgrade abilities on a skill tree. These upgrades can significantly alter gameplay, encouraging aggressive playstyles with health enhancements or improving aiming precision. This system is designed to reward experimentation and support multiple playthroughs.

Valor Mortis is set to release on October 13 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC. The game's grim, war-ravaged setting, inspired by historical events surrounding Napoleon, provides a bleak backdrop for its intense action. The developers at One More Level have aimed to create an experience that is both challenging and visually striking, with a strong emphasis on character abilities and brutal combat.
