Valve has begun clearing out remaining stock of its discontinued Index VR headset, offering significant discounts on the premium hardware. The move comes as the company has shifted focus to its newer Steam Frame.
The Valve Index headset, originally launched in 2019 for $499, is now available for $399.20. However, this discounted price applies only to the headset itself; it does not include controllers or base stations. These components are being sold separately, with left controller replacements priced at $119.20 and replacement tethers at $103.20. Right controllers and base stations are not listed as available replacements.
A Steam news post confirmed that the Valve Index is no longer being produced, stating that "Remaining Index headsets, controllers, and accessories are still available at the new prices below while supplies last." The urgency to act quickly is emphasized by the phrase "while supplies last," as Valve is unlikely to replenish inventory once it is depleted.
Valve designer Lawrence Yang had indicated last year that the Index VR was no longer being manufactured, but this announcement marks the first official confirmation from Valve. Upon its release, the Index was highly regarded. A review from PC Gamer at the time called it the best VR headset available, though it was a tethered device, a specification that has become less common as standalone VR options have gained popularity.
