Valve has provided a new update on the development of the Mann vs. Machine update for Team Fortress 2, confirming that work is still underway. The update was initially announced in June of last year, with Valve soliciting map and mission submissions from the community.

Following an initial progress report in September, a period of silence spanned ten months. Valve's latest blog post states, "We wanted to give everyone an update on the update we already gave on the update we're working on, and here it is: We're still working on the MvM update." The developer elaborated that the process is taking longer than anticipated. "It's taking a lot longer to sort through the new content and changes that we'd originally planned, but we promise we're making progress. Thanks for being patient!"

This extended development timeline aligns with Valve's September report, which noted an unexpectedly high volume of community submissions. At that time, Valve acknowledged it did not have a release date but was actively reviewing submissions and continuing development. While Valve possesses significant financial resources, its internal structure, which allows staff to move between projects based on interest and demand, likely influences the pace of development for updates like this one. The company has seen considerable activity this year, including the launch of the Steam Deck and ongoing development of new projects.

Despite the sporadic nature of major updates for Team Fortress 2, the game does receive regular minor patches. Earlier this month, an update introduced community-created maps, cosmetics, and taunts, followed by subsequent patches to address bugs and refine parameters related to that release. The last major update for Team Fortress 2 arrived in 2023, significantly boosting player counts to an all-time high.
