Valve appears to remain committed to its unreleased hero shooter, Deadlock, as evidenced by its latest substantial update. Despite the game not having a public release and access being invite-only, Valve has continued to iterate on the title for two years. The newest update introduces a wide array of changes, signaling ongoing development.
New Heroes and Map Redesign
The update adds six new playable heroes to Deadlock's roster. These include Nurse Harrow, a character described as a nurse; Rat King, an anthropomorphic rat; Solomon, who is presented as a chess player; Deadman Danny, a zombie character reminiscent of The Rocketeer; Baba, an elderly witch-like figure; and Violet, an artist character.
Alongside the new heroes, the game's environments have undergone a significant visual overhaul. All three primary lanes on the map have been updated. The blue lane now features a mid-century New York aesthetic, the green lane adopts a gothic style, and the yellow lane leans into an industrial, Wall Street theme. Additionally, the map's four districts have been redesigned, with themes ranging from a theater district and Chinatown to a haunted area and a plaza.
UI, HUD, and Communication Improvements
The game's user interface and heads-up display have also seen enhancements. Players can now expect clearer health bars, improved stat indicators, and an event feed to highlight key match moments. The ping system has been reworked, and other communication-related elements have been refreshed.
Additional Content and Accessibility
Beyond the core gameplay changes, the update brings over 10,000 new voice lines, accompanied by a dialogue player for users to listen to them. A visual indicator for parry cooldowns has been added near the reticle. Custom lobbies have been expanded to accommodate up to eight spectators. Furthermore, a range of new accessibility features have been implemented, such as options to modify enemy colors, auto movement and firing capabilities, and voice-over subtitles.
