Valve Developer Accidentally Mentions "HLX," Likely Half-Life 3 Codename

A recent conference appearance by a Valve developer has inadvertently brought renewed attention to the long-rumored codename for Half-Life 3. During a Q&A panel at GameSoundCon, music designer Mike Morasky referenced "HLX" while discussing audio systems, a term widely believed by fans to be associated with a potential Half-Life 3 project.

Morasky was explaining Valve's approach to high dynamic range audio when he noted that "HLX uses its own kind of HDR." He appeared to stop mid-sentence after uttering the codename, an action that some interpreted as a realization of a mistake. A colleague's quiet "nice work" immediately following the remark has also fueled fan speculation.

The codename "HLX" has circulated for years among data miners and the Half-Life community, with no other known Valve project matching the acronym. This accidental mention by Morasky is being seen by many as confirmation that HLX is an actively developed project at Valve. While the company has not officially announced Half-Life 3, the cliffhanger ending of the 2020 VR title Half-Life: Alyx has consistently fueled hopes for a continuation of Gordon Freeman's story.

Given the swift development and release cycle of Half-Life: Alyx, some fans are optimistic that HLX could follow a similar pattern, potentially leading to an announcement in the near future, though such a reveal remains speculative.
