Online speculation is once again swirling around the possibility of a new Half-Life game following a recent mention by a Valve developer. During a presentation at the Game Sound Con event, Valve sound designer Mike Morasky discussed the studio's use of high dynamic range (HDR) audio systems.
Morasky referenced the HDR systems in use for the upcoming game Deadlock and also for a project identified only as "HLX." This remark was immediately followed by a comment from another Valve developer, who stated, "Nice work," potentially indicating that Morasky had inadvertently revealed information about the unannounced project. Morasky is a long-time contributor to Valve's audio landscape, with credits on titles including Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, Half-Life: Alyx, and Counter-Strike 2.
References to "HLX" previously surfaced through datamining efforts, leading some to believe it could be a new Half-Life title, or even the long-rumored Half-Life 3. The franchise remains a cornerstone of Valve's legacy, boasting a dedicated fanbase. The critical and commercial success of Half-Life: Alyx, which was awarded GameSpot's Game of the Year in 2020, suggests a strong potential for Valve's return to the series.
