Valve has quietly revised its marketing materials for the Steam Machine, removing explicit claims that the device can consistently deliver 4K resolution gaming at 60 frames per second with FSR upscaling. The official Steam Machine product page now states "Up to 4K gaming with FSR 4.1," a change from the previously advertised "4K gaming at 60 FPS with FSR."

The alteration, first noted on social media platforms and forums, comes as the Steam Machine faces increased scrutiny following its launch. Valve had previously maintained that the hardware was capable of such performance, with an FAQ stating that "the majority of Steam titles play great at 4K 60FPS with FSR on Steam Machine." However, it also acknowledged that some titles might require more upscaling or a lower framerate with VRR for optimal performance.

Initial media reports based on Valve's provided information also reflected the 4K/60FPS goal. For instance, an early preview noted the ambition to support modern games with ray tracing at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, typically from a 1440p base resolution using FSR.

While the exact catalyst for the marketing adjustment remains unclear, technical analyses suggest a more conservative performance target. One assessment recommended considering the Steam Machine primarily as a 1080p device, with the understanding that achieving acceptable frame rates in demanding titles would likely necessitate lowered settings and significant use of FSR upscaling in Performance mode. Valve has been contacted for comment regarding the change.
