Village in the Shade Blends Cozy Life-Sim with Eldritch Horror

Village in the Shade, a new release from NIS America for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC, presents itself as a charmingly cozy life-simulation game centered around building a self-sufficient farmstead. However, beneath its cheerful 2D painterly aesthetic lies a narrative of encroaching horror and unsettling deception.

The game's facade of coziness begins to crumble early on. The tutorial hints at something amiss when a simple task of chasing an escaped chicken leads to distressing and disturbing imagery. Following this event, the player character awakens, needing care and stumbling into Kagatsu Village. While the villagers initially appear attentive, it soon becomes evident that their motivations are not entirely altruistic. The player is given dilapidated farmland and a run-down shack, with the understanding that integration into the village requires significant labor and adherence to strict rules.

Upon successfully cultivating crops, such as the first batch of turnips, and offering them in a ritual sacrifice ceremony, the player is granted official Kagatsu citizenship. This comes with a set of peculiar and controlling rules, including prohibitions against exposing secrets, searching for lost items, approaching strangers, and a nightly curfew of 11 PM. Despite these ominous regulations, some villagers display outwardly pleasant personalities. Rokkaku, a restaurant owner, is devoted to his adopted niece Yoh. Hasumi, though unlicensed, seems genuinely concerned with the villagers' health. Sazanka, the general store proprietor, provides necessary tools, and Kisuke, the builder, appears to have a good heart beneath a gruff exterior. They teach the player various life-sim skills like fishing, animal husbandry, hunting, and crafting.

Yet, an undercurrent of unease persists. Glimpses of strange behavior and overheard conversations suggest that everyone in Kagatsu harbors secrets. Unsettling noises at night and unexplained occurrences, such as Yoh seeking solace with a baby chick in the player's animal pen, contribute to the growing sense of dread. The game forces the player to eventually break the strict curfew, leading to encounters with otherworldly abominations that create a palpable sense of terror and confusion.

As the narrative progresses, the seemingly innocuous town activities, such as public produce evaluation contests, take on a sinister light when juxtaposed with requests for tithes or unexplained blood-gathering medical exams. The player is left to question the true nature of the village and the lurking horrors in the surrounding blocked-off areas. Village in the Shade masterfully weaves themes of deception and unease into its routine gameplay, creating a unique emotional state of comfort and anxiety.

The game successfully contrasts the familiar warmth of life-simulation mechanics with a horrifying underbelly, making each new development both anticipated and dreaded. The developer aims to offer players a distinct experience that merges the comforting aspects of a life-sim with the chilling elements of a horror game, encouraging players to pick up their tools and delve into the mysteries of Kagatsu Village.
