Vinland Saga Creator Offers Grim Update on Season 3

Fans hoping for a swift return of Thorfinn’s journey in Vinland Saga’s anime adaptation have received disappointing news. Creator Makoto Yukimura has confirmed that a third season is "not currently in progress," dashing hopes for a quick continuation of the historical epic.

In a recent post on X, formerly Twitter, Yukimura responded to a fan inquiring about the possibility of a third season. "Sorry my friend, I have no good news about that. The project is not currently in progress," the author stated, according to reports.

The lack of immediate progress on Vinland Saga Season 3 may be attributed to the demanding schedule of animation studio MAPPA. The studio is reportedly working on several high-profile projects, including the fourth season of Jujutsu Kaisen and the upcoming Chainsaw Man: Assassins Arc. Additionally, MAPPA has three new anime projects scheduled for release in 2027.

Despite the studio's busy slate, the confirmation that a third season isn't even in preliminary stages comes as a surprise to some. This could indicate either a significant delay, with a potential release not expected until 2029 at the earliest, or that sales figures for the second season did not meet expectations, leading MAPPA to pass on further production. Specific sales numbers for Vinland Saga’s second season have not been publicly released.

However, there is some positive data regarding the anime's reach. Between January and June 2023, Vinland Saga’s second season was reportedly the third most-watched anime on Netflix, suggesting a strong audience presence that could still incentivize future production.

The Vinland Saga manga, written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura, concluded its 20-year run in mid-2025.
