The holiday action-comedy Violent Night is set to return with a sequel, Violent Night 2, which director Tommy Wirkola describes as having a "very strong Western-vibe." This new direction sees David Harbour's Santa Claus trading his ancient hammer for a bow and arrow, drawing comparisons to characters like Katniss Everdeen from 'The Hunger Games'.
Set to be released on December 4, 2026, Violent Night 2 continues the surprising reinvention of the Santa Claus character introduced in the first film. While the original riffed on 'Die Hard' with its hostage situation narrative and 'John Wick'-esque combat, the sequel shifts its thematic focus.
"It's definitely in the sub-genre of 'mall-movies,'" Wirkola told Polygon. "And aside from this obviously being a Christmas action-movie first and foremost, it also has a very strong Western vibe, where Santa is our lone hero riding into town (the mall), helping the villagers (shop-owners) in need."
The development of the sequel's core concept involved a period of searching for the right hook. "It actually took a bit of searching before we landed on that particular idea," Wirkola explained. "A few scenarios were discussed and even outlined, stuff that didn't end up being strong enough, but when Pat and Josh finally presented that one idea, along with the mall setting, we knew we had our way in." The co-screenwriters, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, ultimately delivered the concept that allowed the filmmakers to explore character arcs and emotional journeys in a fun way.
An exclusive image from the film depicts Santa Claus riding an escalator while aiming a bow and arrow, a visual departure from the Skullcrusher hammer he wielded in the first installment. The premise of a violent neo-Western set within a mall, with Santa as the central figure, is poised to offer a fresh take on the holiday action genre.
