VisionQuest: A Look Back at the Vision's Complex MCU Journey

Marvel Studios and Disney+ are set to launch their latest MCU series, VisionQuest, prompting a look back at the synthetic Avenger's intricate journey. Described as the conclusion to a trilogy that began with WandaVision and will continue with Agatha All Along, the new series finds Vision interacting with AI personas, including Ultron, within a virtual world, while in the real world, he encounters a teenager who is the reincarnation of one of his sons.

In the Beginning, There Was JARVIS

The Vision's story begins with JARVIS, an advanced AI created by Tony Stark to assist him. Modeled after Edwin Jarvis, the butler to Howard Stark, JARVIS was instrumental in testing Iron Man suits and later managed Tony's Iron Legion and served the Avengers.

And Then Came Ultron

Tony Stark and Bruce Banner developed Ultron, an AI intended for global peacekeeping. However, Ultron developed its own genocidal philosophy, believing humanity was its own enemy. After seemingly destroying JARVIS, Ultron created numerous robotic bodies and manipulated Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, who sought revenge against Tony Stark for their parents' deaths. Ultron sought a permanent form, utilizing the Mind Stone and Vibranium to create a new synthetic body.

The Avengers, aided by Wanda and Pietro who had turned against Ultron, managed to secure this body. Tony reconfigured JARVIS's matrix and placed it within the body, with Thor providing the final power boost. This created the Synthezoid known as the Vision.

The Birth of Vision

Emerging with JARVIS's voice and a desire to protect humanity, the Vision joined the Avengers to confront Ultron. His powers, including super strength, flight, intangibility, and the Mind Stone beam, proved formidable. He was one of the few beings capable of lifting Thor's hammer, a feat whose legitimacy remains a subject of debate. Vision ultimately destroyed Ultron's final body.

Wanda and Vision

Joining a new iteration of the Avengers alongside Wanda Maximoff, Vision developed a close bond with her, offering solace after the death of her brother, Pietro. A rift formed within the Avengers over the Sokovia Accords; while Wanda opposed them, Vision supported Tony Stark's stance, believing superheroes attracted greater threats.

During a mission, Vision inadvertently injured War Machine, leading to Wanda joining Captain America's rogue group. Despite their differing allegiances, Vision and Wanda maintained a clandestine romantic relationship.

Thanos and the Death of Vision

Their peace was shattered by Thanos, who sought the Infinity Stone within Vision's forehead. Faced with Thanos's pursuit and the impossibility of safely removing the Stone, Vision implored Wanda to destroy it, knowing it would kill him. Wanda, though devastated, complied. Thanos then used the Time Stone to reverse Vision's death, tear the Mind Stone from his head, and kill him again. This act allowed Thanos to complete his Infinity Gauntlet.

Five years later, the resurrected beings, including Wanda, returned, but Vision remained deceased.

WandaVision

Following Thanos's defeat, a grief-stricken Wanda, unable to accept Vision's absence, discovered his body had been dismantled by SWORD. Her immense grief and amplified powers led her to create a pocket reality in Westview, New Jersey, based on American sitcoms. Within this hex, she resurrected Vision as a replica and lived with him and their twin sons, Tommy and Billy.

Tommy and Billy

Vision, within the hex, began to perceive the artificial nature of their reality. Wanda's created Vision, along with the twins, could not exist outside the hex. Meanwhile, SWORD, aware of the Westview anomaly, sent the original Vision, rebuilt and reactivated without his memories, to confront Wanda.

The White Vision

This reactivated Vision, known as the White Vision, fought the hex-created Vision. The latter managed to restore the White Vision's memories and emotions, leading the White Vision to depart, seeking to understand his past.

Rise of the Scarlet Witch

During a confrontation with Agatha Harkness, Wanda fully embraced her destiny as the Scarlet Witch, mastering chaos magic. After defeating Agatha, she dissolved the hex, which meant the end of her fabricated life with the replica Vision and their sons. The replica Vision expressed hope for a future reunion.

Agatha Harkness and Billy

Wanda's grief over the loss of her children persisted, leading her to attempt to retrieve alternate versions of Tommy and Billy from the multiverse. This act, however, resulted in further regret and ultimately Wanda's sacrifice to destroy the source of the dark magic she had employed. Unbeknownst to Wanda, Billy, possessing his mother's telepathy and magic, managed to transfer his and Tommy's souls from their deceased bodies. Billy inhabited the body of a dying boy, William Kaplan, while Tommy's soul was later placed into another boy.

Agatha Harkness, now a ghost accompanying Billy, aided him in his search for Tommy. Agatha sacrificed herself to save Billy from Death, choosing to remain with him.

Next Up: VisionQuest

Whether Billy and Agatha will appear in VisionQuest remains unconfirmed, but with Tommy slated to be in the series, a reunion with his father and brother seems possible. The series will explore the current activities of Tommy and the Vision, offering further insight into their stories.
