Visual Novel Writer Jun Maeda Enters Palliative Care for Throat Cancer

Jun Maeda, a highly regarded writer and composer in the visual novel and anime community, has entered palliative care following a diagnosis of throat cancer. The announcement was made by Visual Arts, the Japanese publisher he works with.

Maeda has opted for palliative care over chemotherapy, according to Visual Arts, in order to focus his remaining strength on his creative endeavors. At the time of his diagnosis, he was contributing to the free-to-play mobile RPG Heaven Burns Red and was also involved in an unannounced music project.

Maeda's career has spanned influential visual novels that became cornerstones of the "moe" subgenre, including Air, Clannad, and Kanon. These works were later adapted into anime series. He also wrote the anime Angel Beats!, another project known for its emotional impact. Beyond writing, Maeda composed music for his projects, notably penning the lyrics for "Tori No Uta," the theme song for the Air anime.

Visual Arts has provided contact information for fans wishing to send Maeda messages of encouragement. The publisher stated that Maeda's work on Heaven Burns Red has been completed up to chapter six and indicated his intention to continue writing and composing for as long as possible. "Maeda is currently hospitalized, but even under these circumstances, he remains strongly determined to devote himself to creative work through to the very end," the company shared. A notable work from his career is the visual novel Air, adapted into a beloved anime series.
