Walter Koenig, Star Trek and Babylon 5 Actor, Dies at 90

Walter Koenig, an actor best known for his role as Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series and its subsequent films, has died at the age of 90. His daughter, Danielle Koenig, confirmed his passing.

Koenig joined the Star Trek cast in its second season in 1967, initially hired to appeal to a younger audience. His portrayal of the Russian ensign quickly made him a fan favorite, and he became a core member of the crew throughout the series' run and in the seven films that followed.

Despite his success on Star Trek, Koenig was open about a reportedly strained relationship with co-star William Shatner. In a 2023 post on X, formerly Twitter, Koenig stated, "Bill Shatner is not a friend," though he also acknowledged Shatner's notable performance in "Boston Legal."

Later in his career, Koenig took on a significantly different role in J. Michael Straczynski's Babylon 5. He played Alfred Bester, a senior officer in the Psi Corps, a character described as an antagonist and an "anti-Chekov." This role allowed Koenig to explore a darker, more complex character, a departure from the idealistic persona he embodied in Star Trek.

Koenig maintained a close friendship with Star Trek castmate George Takei, serving as best man at Takei's wedding in 2008. Koenig was married to Judy Levitt for 57 years until her death in 2022. He is also preceded in death by his son, Matthew. He is survived by his daughter, Danielle Koenig.
