Walter Koenig, the actor best known for his role as Ensign Pavel Andreievich Chekov in the original Star Trek series, has died at the age of 90. His death was reported by TMZ and confirmed by his representatives, who stated he passed away peacefully at his North Hollywood home on Sunday due to old age. His daughter and niece were by his side.
Koenig joined the Star Trek cast in its second season, portraying the young, Beatles-esque Russian ensign aboard the USS Enterprise. The character was intended to attract a younger audience, drawing parallels to Davy Jones of The Monkees. Koenig reprised his role as Chekov in the two subsequent seasons of the original series and appeared in all six Star Trek feature films that utilized the original cast.
With Koenig's passing, only William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk, and George Takei, who played Mr. Sulu, are the remaining living cast members from the original series.
George Takei took to social media to honor his former co-star, sharing his condolences. Koenig was born in Chicago on September 14, 1936. He studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, where he was a contemporary of Christopher Lloyd, who would later star opposite Koenig in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
After Star Trek was canceled, Koenig turned his attention to writing for television. Following his time on Star Trek, Koenig also returned to the science fiction genre with his role as Alfred Bester in Babylon 5. In 2017, he reprised his Chekov character, this time as "The Admiral," in the crowdfunded online series Renegades.
Koenig was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, in 2022, and his son, actor Andrew Koenig, who died by suicide in 2010.
An archival interview with Koenig from 2024 offered reflections on his experiences both during and after his time on Star Trek.
