Walter Koenig, who rose to fame as Ensign Pavel Chekhov in the original Star Trek television series, has died at the age of 90. A Variety report confirmed his passing due to natural causes.
Koenig joined the Star Trek cast in its second season, portraying the Russian navigator of the USS Enterprise. He reprised the role in seven feature films, including a memorable turn in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Beyond Star Trek, Koenig delivered a distinct performance as the manipulative Psi Corps officer Alfred Bester in Babylon 5, showcasing a darker, more sinister characterization compared to the earnest Chekhov.
Koenig's career also extended into screenwriting, where he notably penned an episode for the animated Star Trek series, making him the first cast member to write for the franchise. He also accumulated several video game credits, predominantly within the Star Trek universe, with the exception of the 2018 Netflix interactive movie Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout.
Fellow Star Trek actor George Takei shared his grief on Bluesky, recalling his nearly six-decade friendship with Koenig. "Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend," Takei wrote. "To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too. Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course."
Koenig celebrated his 90th birthday on September 14, the same day Takei and his husband, Brad, marked their 18th wedding anniversary, a date Koenig reportedly cherished sharing.
