The team behind the upcoming shooter Wardogs anticipates that porting the game to future console generations, including Sony's PlayStation 6 and Microsoft's Project Helix, will be a relatively straightforward process. In an interview with IGN, Bulkhead co-founder Howard Philpott stated that the primary focus is on making the game performant, which should allow for a direct port to next-gen hardware.
Senior producer Kane Allard added that Bulkhead is already in communication with platform holders regarding the console versions of Wardogs. The studio does not foresee significant challenges in adapting the game for future machines, expecting that meeting the criteria for current-generation base consoles will translate to minimal additional work for next-gen versions. Allard noted that the focus will likely be on enhancing performance rather than introducing entirely new features for the subsequent hardware.
This approach to next-generation development contrasts with some industry sentiment. Former PlayStation Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida recently suggested that console manufacturers should aim to extend the lifespan of current hardware, such as the PS5 and Nintendo Switch, due to rising development costs. Analysts have also speculated about the release timelines for new consoles, with some suggesting a PlayStation 6 launch in 2028, though this remains unconfirmed by Sony.
Microsoft's plans for next-gen hardware, codenamed Project Helix, are described by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma as a "family of devices" rather than a single console, indicating a broader strategy that may include mobile and partnered solutions alongside a primary console offering. Details on this initiative are expected to emerge as plans develop.
Currently, Wardogs is available in early access on PC. The game is slated for a console release in 2028. Next week will see the launch of Season 2 for Wardogs, which will introduce new gameplay features, including dynamic weather effects like rain.
