Wardogs Season 2 Will Introduce a Significant Rain System Affecting Gameplay

Wardogs is set to receive a substantial gameplay overhaul with the introduction of a new rain system in its upcoming Season 2 update, scheduled for release on October 15. Developer Bulkhead has revealed that this weather effect will not be dynamic, meaning that if a match features rain, it will persist for the entire duration.

Senior producer Kane Allard stated that the rain system "completely changes the game," acknowledging that the addition will be met with mixed reactions from players. "It's going to be positive for some players. It's going to be negative for others. Your play styles might be affected," Allard explained. He likened the rain-affected matches to a "different game mode," suggesting that players' preferences for or against the rain will heavily influence their experience.

The rain's impact on gameplay is described as drastic. The game environment will become darker, significantly reducing player visibility. Developers have noted instances where their own sense of direction was compromised due to the altered visual conditions. Strategically, the accompanying thunder can be used to mask the sounds of gunfire and other player actions. The sound design will also be more nuanced, with raindrops producing different auditory cues depending on the surfaces they hit, such as rooftops and player helmets.

Environmental destruction will also play a role, with destroyed roofs potentially exposing players indoors to the rain. While windows fogging up is also a feature, its effect on player concealment remains unclear.

Looking ahead, Bulkhead has not ruled out the possibility of other weather effects, such as snow. However, the team is cautious about introducing such features, considering the potential impact on both gameplay and game performance. CEO Joe Brammer indicated that elements like nighttime conditions would necessitate additions such as flashlights, night vision goggles, and lasers, suggesting that more complex weather systems may take considerable time to implement.

This season will also include a new gambling mechanic and addresses from the developer regarding why the blue team historically has a higher loss rate in Wardogs. Information regarding a potential next-gen port for the game is also available.
