Digital Extremes is set to expand upon one of Warframe's most emotionally resonant stories with the upcoming "Jade Shadows: Constellations" update. This new quest serves as the first direct sequel to a previous intermission quest, "Jade Shadows," which was released approximately two years ago.
"Jade Shadows" distinguished itself by focusing on the themes of fatherhood and featuring a tragic narrative inspired by the film "Children of Men." This departure from Warframe's typical storyline initially made the development team nervous, according to community director and live ops lead Megan Everett. However, the quest's positive reception paved the way for "Constellations."
Everett described "Constellations" as a "continuation of a story no one saw coming," noting that the team felt a strong desire to revisit this narrative thread. The update aims to balance the emotional core of the original quest with a heightened sense of action. The narrative follows the conflict between two brothers, Orion and Sirius, who were introduced at the end of the first "Jade Shadows" quest. Their battle takes place across a fractured timeline, reflecting the player's choice at the conclusion of the original quest.
"Constellations bring some violence that we didn't do in Shadows," Everett explained. "The narrative is still very focused on Stalker as a father, but you have this eternalism battle between two realities where each child was chosen. So the epic dueling violence happens between these brothers battling for the spotlight." While incorporating more combat than its predecessor, the quest still retains significant emotional moments. The choice made by the player at the end of the initial "Jade Shadows" quest will directly influence their experience in "Constellations."
The "intermission" quest format, which Digital Extremes uses to explore smaller narratives and introduce new gameplay mechanics between major story beats, has proven to be a valuable tool. "Constellations" continues this approach by allowing the exploration of characters and themes outside of the main Warframe storyline. Everett highlighted the potential for these updates to give depth to previously minor characters, citing "The Sergeant" as an example of a character who could be further developed. The goal, she stated, is to keep the game's universe engaging by exploring these occasional, more experimental stories.
