Warframe Dev Calls End of Destiny 2 Support 'Heartbreaking'

Megan Everett, community director and live ops lead at Digital Extremes, has described the recent news regarding the end of new updates and expansions for Destiny 2 as "heartbreaking" and "earth-shattering." Despite the long-standing comparisons and perceived rivalry between Warframe and Destiny 2 due to their shared genre space, Everett stated that no one at Warframe is celebrating the situation.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Everett emphasized the importance of healthy competition within the gaming landscape. "A game is healthy when you have competitors," she noted, praising Bungie's efforts in developing the Destiny 2 narrative despite their challenges. The sentiment was that seeing a fellow long-term live-service game reach such a juncture is a somber event for the industry and its players.

Everett also highlighted a poignant observation: the surge of positive player sentiment and support for Destiny 2 following the announcement, a stark contrast to what she described as a period of sustained negativity. She expressed a wish for this "love" to have been more vocal and present during the game's more challenging phases, suggesting that such support could have been immensely beneficial to the developers and the community.

Addressing potential player migration, Everett clarified that Warframe is not a direct substitute for those seeking a similar player-versus-player experience to Destiny 2. "We tried the PvP thing, and we're not a PvP game!" she stated. "If you're coming to Warframe trying to scratch that itch, you're going to have that itch for a long time." While Destiny 2's servers will remain active, allowing players to continue engaging with its existing content, the cessation of new developments marks a significant shift for the title and its dedicated player base.
