Digital Extremes is bringing a tabletop roleplaying experience to Warframe with Fables & Frontiers, a minigame inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. This new addition is described as "legally distinct" and will be a permanent expansion within the game, fulfilling a narrative desire for the character Amir.
Amir, a protoframe introduced in the 1999 expansion, has long expressed a wish to play a tabletop game with his companions. Fables & Frontiers is set to make this a reality within Warframe's in-game K.I.M. messaging system. The minigame will present a text-based adventure, featuring elements such as maps and game pieces within a dedicated space in the Höllvania Mall, designed to resemble Amir's campaign room. Players will also be able to summon Amir within this space.
Warframe creative director Rebecca Ford stated that Fables & Frontiers is a permanent expansion, deemed too important to remove as the game moves beyond the 1999 timeline and progresses toward the new Tau system. Community director Megan Everett described the minigame as a "community love letter," acknowledging player requests for Amir to finally play the game.
The development team at Digital Extremes has a personal connection to tabletop roleplaying, with many members having played games like Pathfinder and Dungeons & Dragons as a hobby. The Fables & Frontiers concept was initially introduced as a reference in the 1999 expansion for "verisimilitude." The idea to develop it into a playable minigame emerged during discussions for a Nightwave event focused on the 1999 content.
This August, Amir will take over the free Nightwave battle pass system for an event called Amir's Shockwave. This event will include daily and weekly quests offering new rewards, such as the song "Running Late" by On-Lyne. It is within the context of this event that players will be able to engage with Fables & Frontiers.
Further expanding the game's connections to the tabletop and voice acting community, Matthew Mercer, an acclaimed Dungeon Master and voice actor, is joining the Warframe cast. Mercer will voice Brysko, a detective-themed Warframe, in the upcoming Tau expansion.
