Owlcat Games' Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, which launched in December 2023, has overcome its initial launch issues to become a highly engaging RPG, according to a recent retrospective. Despite a rocky beta period and a lukewarm review at launch, the game has matured into what is described as an "all-timer RPG" by players who, like the author, have approached it after its initial release.

In a piece for PC Gamer, the author recounts initial frustration with Rogue Trader's intricate systems, noting the unfamiliarity of its mechanics compared to Dungeons & Dragons-derived RPGs. Terms like 'wounds' instead of 'hit points' initially felt alienating. However, with the release of its Infinite Crusade DLC and time for the game to be updated, a second chance has proven rewarding.

The author highlights the depth of character building as a key indicator of the game's quality, to the point of restarting the game after 20 hours to create a new character. Early in the game's lifecycle, navigating the complex level-up screens was a challenge due to a lack of readily available guides. Players are now advised to consult resources from YouTubers like cRPG Bro or Revan619.

While initially experimenting with the potent but ultimately janky "Death World Pyromancer Psyker Blade Dancer Executioner" build, the author found more enjoyment with the "Navy Officer Warrior Arch Militant" build, exemplified by the companion Abellard. This build focuses on a dual-wielding approach with a sword and gun, where critical hits or parries with the sword trigger a free shot with the gun, and vice-versa. This synergy creates a dynamic combat style.

Describing a pivotal encounter, the author details defeating a powerful Chaos Space Marine boss at the end of Act One. The tactical execution involved focusing heavy fire from companions like Argenta, the gun nun, and using Cassia for extra actions, culminating in a finishing blow by the player character. This victory, achieved without losing critical shuttles, was met with a satisfying achievement.

Beyond its acclaimed turn-based combat and buildcrafting, Rogue Trader offers a complete RPG experience including companion interactions, romance options, skills, planetary management, and trade. The game's redemption arc suggests a positive trajectory for Owlcat's future projects, including their upcoming Dark Heresy RPG.
