Players of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have consistently reported that the Chaos enemies present a greater challenge than the Tyranid hordes. Now, game director Dmitry Grigorenko has confirmed this sentiment and revealed that developer Saber Interactive is planning to address the balance between the two factions.
Since the game's launch in 2024, players have noted a significant difference in difficulty. The Tyranids, characterized as a swarm-type enemy, flood the screen with a mix of smaller foes and larger, hard-hitting units. This provides a visceral combat loop for players wielding the Space Marine's Power Sword and Power Fist against the xenos.
In contrast, the Thousand Sons, a Chaos faction composed of former Space Marines and daemonic forces, offer a more deliberate and challenging encounter. When these enemies, particularly Terminators, unleash missile barrages, the gameplay can become significantly more demanding, demanding a more tactical approach from the player. This shift in challenge is particularly pronounced on higher difficulties, where Chaos can become a significant hurdle, while the Tyranids often remain manageable.
This disparity has led many players to find fighting the Tyranids more enjoyable than confronting Chaos. Grigorenko acknowledged these concerns in a recent Reddit AMA, stating, "We understand that Chaos is more difficult to fight against Tyranids, yes." He further confirmed that "There will be some pass on this in the future." However, he clarified that the adjustments likely won't involve making allied bots more effective specifically against Chaos enemies.
While Grigorenko did not detail the specific nature of the planned changes, potential adjustments could include nerfs to Chaos enemy toughness, damage output, or spawn frequency. The fundamental distinction between fighting the overwhelming swarms of Tyranids and the more elite Chaos forces is expected to remain, given Chaos's nature as corrupted Space Marines.
Despite the potential for balance tweaks, the unique appeal of cleaving through a dense horde of alien monsters with bolter fire may continue to make Tyranid encounters inherently more satisfying for some players. Nevertheless, the prospect of a more balanced challenge against Chaos forces is a welcome one for those who find the current difficulty frustrating.
