Warhammer Survivors, developed by Auroch Digital in partnership with Poncle, aims to be more than just a clone of the popular Vampire Survivors formula. Instead, it seeks to celebrate the distinct elements of both the Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar universes, integrating them into a compelling roguelike experience. The game is set to release on November 10, 2026, with a demo currently available on PC via Steam and Xbox.
Players can experience two distinct campaigns, one for Warhammer 40,000 and another for Age of Sigmar, each with its own set of unlocks, stages, and achievements. The game incorporates weapons and mechanics directly inspired by the tabletop gaming experience. For instance, Nuln Oil, a popular shade of paint in the Warhammer universe, functions as a weapon that splashes enemies with flammable oil, making them more susceptible to fire damage. Another notable inclusion is the D6 Dice, a massive die that appears on screen and explodes with effects based on the rolled number. The game even features a Hobby Table stage, set on a workstation, and a Paint Pot system that unlocks characters based on specific color combinations.
Allies in the Horde
A significant departure from the original Vampire Survivors is the introduction of NPC allies. Players can recruit other characters from the Warhammer universe to fight alongside them, choosing to utilize the weapons they would typically wield. For example, players can unlock Trooper Bartosz Kozlowski and equip the Lasgun weapon, causing him to follow and attack nearby enemies. This ally system provides a tactical layer and a sense of camaraderie, reminiscent of squad-based gameplay in other titles.
Challenges and Progression
Runs in Warhammer Survivors can vary in length, but the game consistently offers objectives to pursue, often marked by a question mark on the map. Discovering and unlocking characters like Trooper Bartosz Kozlowski or The Legend of Catachan presents unique challenges, such as overcoming enemies with Synapse Emitters that empower nearby foes. Accomplishing various in-game objectives rewards players with new weapons, passive abilities, and more, driving the satisfying progression loop.
However, the demo does present some of the same potential frustrations found in its predecessor. The initial stages of a run can feel slow, with players starting as weak characters and facing repetitive gameplay until they gain power. The need to traverse significant distances to find specific objectives, as seen when searching for The Legend of Catachan, can lead to a sense of tedium. With a full game boasting over 40 characters, 75 weapons, and 15 stages, it is hoped that the breadth of content will mitigate this early-game slowness.
Age of Sigmar's Vermin Tide
Shifting to the Age of Sigmar setting introduces players to the Skaven, a rat-like race. These enemies offer a different challenge, with the Vermintide sometimes swarming in horizontal lines, forcing players to adapt their strategies and creating a true bullet-hell scenario. The Age of Sigmar campaign also allows for rewarding runs, particularly when RNG aligns to provide chests with multiple weapon and passive upgrades, accelerating character evolution. Evolving Neave Blacktalon's Tempest Axes into lightning-infused Whirlwind Axes, for instance, dramatically increases player power.
One persistent challenge, however, is understanding the intricate combinations of weapons and passives. For newcomers, this steep learning curve can be a significant hurdle, potentially hindering their enjoyment until the game's systems fully click. While trial and error are part of the genre, Warhammer Survivors could benefit from improved onboarding to ease players into its mechanics.
Despite these challenges, once the core gameplay loop is understood, Warhammer Survivors promises a deeply rewarding experience for fans. The game is not reinventing the wheel but offers meaningful additions that respect the source material and enhance gameplay. With features like challenging Extremis Bosses and unlockable Relics that modify game modes, the full release is poised to deliver a robust and engaging adventure for both Warhammer and Vampire Survivors enthusiasts.
