Warhammer Survivors, developed by Auroch Digital, is shaping up to be more than just a thematic spin-off of Vampire Survivors; early impressions suggest it’s a sequel in spirit. The game, slated for release on November 10, integrates core mechanics from its inspiration while introducing several new elements that enrich the experience.
Familiar Foundations with a Grimdark Twist
Everything that makes Vampire Survivors addictive is present in Warhammer Survivors. Players will find weapon evolutions, enemies that drop experience chests, arcane systems, bosses, challenges, and upgrades, all re-skinned with Warhammer's signature grimdark aesthetic. Instead of experience gems, players collect experience skulls, and the formidable bosses known as Red Deaths are replaced by equally imposing 'Extremis' bosses. Despite the thematic changes, the core loop of surviving increasingly overwhelming hordes remains intact.
Several unique in-game elements are present, such as Nuln oil, which can damage and slow enemies while also making them more flammable. Explosive dice also feature, adding an element of chaotic destruction to the battlefield. The game separates its content by Warhammer universe, with distinct characters, upgrades, and unlocks for both Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar. While some passive abilities may carry over, each universe offers a unique progression path.
Novel Mechanics and Thematic Maps
Auroch Digital has implemented novelties beyond simple reskins. The game features followers who can join the player in battle after being rescued. In subsequent runs, these followers will rejoin the player when their associated weapons are selected during leveling. One character, for example, gains buffs from having more followers, allowing players to command fellow Astra Militarum grunts alongside his upgraded lasgun.
Maps are designed with strong thematic identities. The Warhammer 40,000 map plunges players into a battlefield overrun by Tyranids, characterized by its aggressive pink hues and alien topography. The Age of Sigmar map focuses on Skaven, complete with glowing warpstones. One particularly unique map transforms the player's own tabletop into a battlefield, complete with paints and measuring tape, serving as a gathering point for the game's monsters.
Challenging Encounters and Unique Faction Traits
Warhammer Survivors appears to present a steeper challenge than its predecessor. The pace of battles escalates rapidly, and discovering effective weapon combinations to manage the enemy hordes takes time. The demo, in particular, might feel more challenging due to a limited selection of weapons and characters, creating a sense of desperation for healing that might be less pronounced in the full release.
Enemy factions possess unique traits that add strategic depth. Tyranids, for instance, can be empowered by more intelligent units using synapse power to enrage nearby creatures, necessitating quick elimination of these psychic foes. Orks can trigger a 'WAAAGH!', increasing their numbers, speed, and strength. The game has also proven to be a smooth experience on the Steam Deck, with performance already feeling excellent despite ongoing compatibility work.
With its launch imminent, Warhammer Survivors promises to deliver a robust experience that honors the legacy of Vampire Survivors while carving out its own identity within the Warhammer universe.
