The YouTube channel The Outer Circle, a decade-long presence in the Warhammer community known for its commentary and lore analysis, particularly concerning the Horus Heresy setting, has been shut down by its creator, Macca. The decision follows a series of Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedowns from Games Workshop targeting 3D printing designs sold on platforms like Cults 3D, alongside a significant toll of burnout from online harassment.
Macca stated in a video announcing the channel's end that the disputes over 3D printing designs, which he created to fill gaps in the official product range and later made freely available, had become untenable. He expressed frustration with the debate surrounding the legality and proximity of his designs to Games Workshop's official miniatures, feeling that his efforts to provide community options were misunderstood.
"I have nothing I can really offer at this point," Macca explained. "I tried for years to create my own model lines to fill in the gaps in the product range when models did not exist, to give you more options for your armies. And when I did that, once I sold enough of them, I made them free."
He further elaborated on his motivations, citing a "moral issue" with Games Workshop's practices. Macca believes the company has not adequately supported its community and has a tendency to abandon game systems for profit. He also pointed to his background in the plastics industry as evidence that Games Workshop's products are "incredibly overpriced." However, he noted a lack of receptiveness from parts of the community, who he feels are unwilling to criticize the company.
The creator revealed that he had been in communication with Games Workshop's intellectual property staff, but there was no clear indication of a resolution or a path to lifting the takedowns. Macca emphasized that the venture was never primarily about financial gain, and he charged less than many others engaged in similar activities.
Beyond the intellectual property disputes, Macca detailed a decade of enduring significant online abuse, including death threats and attempted doxxing. "I have no desire to continue receiving threats or being called a whinger for bringing up things with evidence and logic behind them," he stated.
The situation at The Outer Circle reflects a broader tension within the Warhammer community regarding Games Workshop's approach to 3D printing and intellectual property. This year has seen numerous creators report takedowns, leading some to characterize it as a campaign against 3D printing by the company, which is known for its strong IP protection across various media, including video games and even specific terminology.
Macca's departure highlights the deep divisions on this issue within the community, with some siding with the creator and others defending Games Workshop. Games Workshop has not issued a public statement regarding these specific incidents.
In a subsequent post on his Patreon, Macca reiterated his stance, stating, "I have no want for money, it was always a moral question, and the answer to that question is that there are far more people of little moral character, who will bend over backwards to justify the actions of the company and will hate their fellow community. I've received numerous death threats over the years, attempts at doxxing, and I have a family to worry about."
He concluded by expressing gratitude to those who engaged with his content respectfully. "It's been a ride. Thank you to all the people who took the time to say hello over the years, who supported and actually used their brains to argue with me in good faith, I respect you greatly."
