Warhorse Studios, the developer behind the upcoming open-world RPG adaptation of The Lord of the Rings and the acclaimed Kingdom Come: Deliverance, has confirmed it was the target of a significant cyberattack. The studio is currently working with cybersecurity experts to secure its systems, investigate the full scope of the breach, and assess its impact.
In an announcement on its website, Warhorse Studios stated that the attack involved unauthorized access to company systems and data. CEO Martin Frývaldský emphasized that the studio's immediate priority is to secure its systems, determine the extent of the breach, and take necessary steps to protect employees, partners, and the community. The company is dedicating resources to address the situation and will provide further information as it becomes available.
The studio has not yet specified what data, if any, was stolen during the incident. This attack occurs amid a broader increase in cyber threats, with recent security vulnerabilities, potentially amplified by AI, impacting various online services and gaming companies.
Several other gaming entities have recently experienced similar incidents. Capcom and Square Enix have both reported online breaches where hackers accessed player data, although they did not directly link these attacks to AI. Additionally, Capcom recently took certain online functionalities of Street Fighter V offline due to security concerns related to the PHP programming language, leading to temporary suspensions of sales on the PlayStation Store and Steam while the issue is addressed. The incident also impacted some older mobile games, forcing them offline permanently. Warhorse Studios is coordinating with relevant authorities as its investigation continues.
