Game industry luminary Warren Spector has voiced strong disapproval over the closure of BioWare, labeling the decision "utter bullshit" and questioning the accountability of executives involved. Spector, known for his work on seminal titles like Deus Ex and System Shock, expressed his dismay in a LinkedIn post, prefacing his comments with a warning for sensitive readers.
"BioWare is more than just another studio," Spector wrote. "For decades it’s played a central role in the history of our medium. They, for many years, as effectively as any studio, married art and commerce. Their work changed things."
He continued, "This is such bad news, such a devastating historic event all I can say is that it’s utter bullshit. Anyone who participated in this travesty should be ashamed." Spector, typically known for his measured public demeanor, noted that he rarely curses but felt compelled to do so in this instance. He suggested that "folks in suits (real or virtual)" responsible for the closure should lose their jobs, posing the question, "What do you contribute to gaming? What price do you pay for failure?"
Spector's remarks highlight a recurring criticism within the industry: the disconnect between executive compensation and the consequences faced by development staff when studios are shuttered. He lamented that "it’s never the C-suite that suffers when the axe falls and hundreds or thousands of the people who actually make games get put out of work." This sentiment comes amid reports of significant compensation for Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson, even as layoffs impact game development studios.
The closure of BioWare, a studio with a storied history in creating narrative-driven role-playing games, is seen by many as a significant loss to the industry. Spector's impassioned response underscores the emotional impact of such decisions on industry veterans and long-time fans alike.
