Legendary game developer Warren Spector, renowned for his work on seminal titles like Ultima Underworld, System Shock, and Deus Ex, has announced his retirement from game development after more than 40 years in the industry.
Spector shared his decision via LinkedIn, stating that he feels he has accomplished what he set out to do. His career has encompassed a wide range of experiences, from tabletop role-playing games to digital titles developed by teams of varying sizes, from a dozen to 800 individuals. He has worked for both large corporations and startups, and he emphasized the importance of fostering the careers of talented individuals.
"With all that behind me and with age and health (my business) catching up with me I'm feeling like I've done what I set out to do," Spector wrote. His future plans include writing books, extensive reading, lecturing, and potentially some consulting. He also expressed a desire to return to playing the piano.
Throughout his career, Spector has often been credited as the primary creator of his games. However, he has consistently highlighted the collaborative nature of game development, emphasizing that significant achievements are the result of strong teams. "You don't ship anything, let alone anything good, without a great team," he stated previously, recalling the development of Deus Ex. He reiterated this sentiment regarding Epic Mickey, crediting the team at Junction Point for their work.
Despite his decision, Spector admitted to mixed feelings, mentioning three specific games he still wishes he could make: one large, one small, and one currently unmakeable concept. He also noted that the industry has changed significantly and is no longer as enjoyable for him. Spector believes it is time for a new generation of developers to have their opportunities.
Spector's recent tenure as studio director at Otherside Entertainment saw the release of Underworld Ascendant, which was met with a poor reception. The studio's subsequent title, Thick as Thieves, also struggled to gain traction. Furthermore, the development of System Shock 3, a project aligning with Spector's signature style, ended unsuccessfully when the project was transferred to Tencent in 2020.
While Spector stated he is unlikely to return to game development, he left the door slightly ajar, saying "Never say never." He concluded his announcement with a message to aspiring developers: "your job is to make people forget people like me ever existed."
