Call of Duty: Warzone is set to receive a long-requested feature that will allow players to disable character skins from other Call of Duty titles. This new toggle will be implemented with the launch of the game's first season alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
When activated, the filter will ensure that players only see operator skins originating from Modern Warfare 4 in both lobbies and matches within Warzone. This feature addresses the visual inconsistencies that have arisen in the free-to-play mode since 2020, as it has accumulated hundreds of cosmetics from various Call of Duty entries. The diverse themes and aesthetics of these different games have led to a mix of skins that often clash.
Infinity Ward had previously committed to a more grounded and authentic approach to skins and collaborations for Modern Warfare 4. The new toggle reinforces this by giving players greater control over their visual experience in Warzone. The official Call of Duty blog stated that the filter was developed specifically for the "Modern Warfare 4 chapter" to provide this enhanced control.
Previous Call of Duty titles, such as Black Ops 6 and 7, featured collaborations with franchises like American Dad and The Boys, whose aesthetics did not always align with the Call of Duty universe. The introduction of the skin toggle is a significant development, as the visibility of purchased skins to other players is a key aspect of their appeal. Importantly, the filter only affects the player who enables it; it does not alter how the skin appears to other players or the purchaser.
Players will not be able to discern whether teammates or opponents in a match have the skin filter active. While this feature offers a welcome degree of customization, it does not prevent Infinity Ward and Activision from introducing new skins that players might find out of place. The filter is not designed to intelligently distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate skins, but rather to universally disable cosmetics from other games.
Currently, the filter is exclusive to Warzone. It remains to be seen if players will request similar functionality for the Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer if post-launch skins are introduced that they deem unfitting for the game's atmosphere. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 23rd for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2.
