Watch Dogs Franchise Not Actively Developing New Games, Says Ubisoft CEO

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has indicated that while the Watch Dogs franchise remains a significant brand for the company's future, there are currently no new entries in active development. Guillemot's comments, reported by Game File, suggest that Ubisoft is still strategizing the next direction for the series.

A Watch Dogs movie is in development, though its release date remains unannounced. Production on the film concluded some time ago, with reshoots occurring last year, yet promotional efforts have been minimal. The lack of a release date adds to the mystery surrounding the film's eventual launch.

The first Watch Dogs game debuted in 2014, initially slated for a launch alongside the PlayStation 4. While it aimed to compete with Grand Theft Auto V, it received a mixed reception for not fully realizing its ambitious premise, yet it still managed to make an impact on the open-world crime genre. Its 2016 sequel, set in San Francisco, was generally better received but did not sustain the franchise's momentum.

Watch Dogs: Legion, released in 2020, introduced ambitious mechanics like the ability to play as any non-player character. However, it garnered a generally mixed response from players. The future of the franchise has been uncertain since Legion's release, with Ubisoft apparently seeking ways to differentiate future installments from major upcoming releases like Grand Theft Auto VI, which is expected to significantly influence the genre. While future Watch Dogs games are possible, they are not anticipated in the immediate years ahead.
