Berlin-based solo developer Lenja Kaufmann has released Waterful, a tranquil puzzle game focused on drawing rivers through procedurally generated environments. Described as a "nature-builder," the game challenges players to create waterways using a limited water supply, which can be replenished by connecting to springs.
Players have the ability to shape and refill the terrain as they see fit. The depth and form of the rivers directly influence the type of vegetation that grows, and this flora in turn attracts various creatures, from butterflies to foxes. Each discovered creature rewards the player with a sticker. The game also features buildable machines designed to help manage watercourses, such as rerouting them over hills.
Kaufmann cites games like Dorfromantik, Tiny Glade, Islanders, Terra Nil, and Townscaper as inspirations for Waterful. The developer emphasizes that the experience is intentionally simple, offering a focused journey rather than a large-scale simulation, given its solo development.
