Wendy's Is Releasing a Turn-Based RPG on Steam

Wendy’s, the American fast-food chain, is venturing into the gaming world with the upcoming release of a turn-based RPG on Steam. Titled WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones, the game presents a 2D pixel-art aesthetic and casts players as Wendy on a quest to "battle evil mech-monsters to save a culinary kingdom in peril."

The game's trailer and screenshots showcase Wendy and a party of three companions navigating environments filled with food-related challenges and engaging in combat against sentient menu items. Enemies such as a french fry monster dubbed 'Frydusa' and obstacles like a spilled river of sauce have been featured. The in-game dialogue appears to incorporate self-aware humor, with characters referencing Wendy's iconic "Where's the beef?" slogan and comically questioning names like "Baconator."

Players can utilize Wendy's menu items, including a Dave’s Single and a Junior Bacon Cheeseburger, to restore health points during battles. Allies such as Sir Chicken also join Wendy in her adventures. While a specific launch date has not yet been announced, the game is slated for release "soon" and has an official Steam page, indicating a serious development effort rather than a mere marketing gimmick.

WendyQuest is being developed by 81monkeys, an independent studio based in Port Moody, British Columbia. The studio is also working on World of Anterra, an open-world RPG described as being inspired by both classic and modern titles.

Initial reactions to Wendy's foray into gaming have been largely positive, with social media users expressing surprise at the game's apparent quality and anticipation for its release. The game's Steam page emphasizes that the title is "100% fresh and 100% human made," a detail that has resonated with players concerned about AI-generated content. Some players have drawn comparisons to Burger King's 2006 promotional game, Sneak King, though WendyQuest appears to be a more substantial gaming experience.

This is not Wendy's first foray into game development; the company previously released a tabletop RPG titled Feast of Legends in 2019. The upcoming WendyQuest is considered one of the more ambitious marketing initiatives from a fast-food brand.
