Fans of the long-running animated series Futurama have often pondered the origins of Beelzebot, also known as the Robot Devil. This musically inclined antagonist, who presides over robot Hell—located beneath a dilapidated amusement park in New Jersey—first appeared in the 1999 season 1 episode “Hell is Other Robots.” Voiced by Dan Castellaneta, the Robot Devil has become a recurring character, even featuring in the season 4 episode “The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings.”
Despite his numerous appearances, the exact circumstances of the Robot Devil's creation remain a mystery. The Futurama fan wiki, The Infosphere, notes that it is unknown when or why he was built, though he was likely constructed before or around 2275, the year the Fairness in Hell Act was enacted. This act allows robots to be freed from Hell if a friend can defeat the Robot Devil in a fiddling contest. Online discussions on the Futurama subreddit have proposed various fan theories, including suggestions that the robot actor Calculon or the powerful business tycoon Mom might have built him.
In a recent discussion with Polygon about the current season of Futurama, co-developer and showrunner David X. Cohen addressed the fan speculation. When asked about the Robot Devil's origins, Cohen acknowledged that the question is a recurring topic among the show's writing staff. "We have this debate in the writers' room a lot, like, why did they build a robot whose purpose seems to be to murder people?" Cohen stated, also referencing the character Roberto, a robot designed for stabbing. "Like Roberto, the stabbing robot — whose idea was that?"
Cohen offered a potential explanation rooted in the show's exploration of robot evolution. He suggested that some robots might have broken free from their original programming to become criminals or entities like the Robot Devil. "We've done a little bit of robot evolution in the history of the show as well, and I think it's possible that some robots broke free of the confines of their programming and became criminals, devils, or whatever they chose to be," he explained.
This perspective implies that the Robot Devil might have originated as a standard robot who independently defied his programming. While Cohen indicated he had not been directly asked this question before and appeared intrigued by the premise, he did not provide a definitive answer. The possibility remains that future installments of Futurama could offer fans a concrete explanation for the Robot Devil's creation.
Futurama is available for streaming on Hulu and Disney Plus.
