As Grand Theft Auto VI approaches its release, with preorders now available, Rockstar Games has described the upcoming title as a "single-player experience." This has led to speculation about its features, particularly regarding crossplay and save data transfer.

While GTA 6 is confirmed for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 at launch, a PC release is expected at a later date, mirroring the 19-month delay seen for Grand Theft Auto V on PC. However, Rockstar has yet to provide any official confirmation regarding crossplay functionality for GTA 6. Based on the precedent set by previous games in the series, crossplay appears unlikely. Grand Theft Auto V does not currently feature crossplay, and it is not possible to transfer characters between console and PC versions of GTA Online. Furthermore, cross-generation play within the same console family, such as between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, is also not supported in GTA Online.

Rockstar has, however, implemented a system that allows players to migrate their characters from older console generations to newer ones when upgrading within the same family, for example, from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. Despite potential consumer demand for crossplay in GTA 6, the absence of official communication from Rockstar suggests the game will likely follow the established pattern of its predecessors. In the interim, fans can examine available screenshots and engage in speculation about potential activities within the game.
