Developer Kraken Express has detailed plans for the first major update to its early access survival game, Windrose, which may include the addition of wind mechanics that influence sailing. The update is set to introduce a new biome called the Ashlands, several new pirate ship classes, expanded story content, and new building options.

The Ashlands biome is described as a region marked by past volcanic activity, offering new islands, enemies, resources, and a challenging boss. Players can also expect new building pieces and decorations to enhance their pirate havens. Alongside these additions, new ship classes and variants will be introduced, and NPC ships are slated to exhibit more natural behaviors, moving in formations rather than random patterns.

While Windrose's current design offers a forgiving survival experience where gear does not degrade, hunger and thirst are non-factors, and shipwrecks are easily rectified, the absence of wind currently allows for constant top-speed sailing in any direction. Kraken Express acknowledges player requests to implement wind influence on sailing, stating they are exploring the idea. The studio emphasized that any such system would aim to remain "fun and simple," aligning with Windrose's objective to be an adventure game without overly hardcore simulation elements, distinguishing it from inspirations like Valheim where wind can significantly impact travel speed and create a more challenging, sometimes tedious, experience.

No release window has been provided for this upcoming update. Further details, including an estimated release timeframe, will be shared as development progresses.
