Paweł Sasko, the lead quest designer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, has reflected on the game's notoriously complex "Bloody Baron" questline, admitting that he would approach its design differently today. While acknowledging the quest's narrative strength and its significant impact on players, Sasko identified specific areas where he believes the execution could have been improved.

"In the Bloody Baron quest, I made so many mistakes," Sasko stated in an interview. He elaborated that while the quest, which can take around four hours to complete, is strong on a narrative level, its pacing could have been better managed. The questline forms a significant part of the RPG's first act, tasking players with helping Geralt locate Ciri by first assisting the titular Bloody Baron in finding his missing wife and daughter.

The narrative takes a dark turn as it unfolds the Baron's personal struggles with alcoholism and violence, revealing that he inadvertently caused his wife's miscarriage. Players are confronted with the tragic consequences, including an encounter with the Baron's unborn child, now a Botchling. Sasko noted that the questline contains numerous twists and turns, perhaps more than were strictly necessary.

Drawing on lessons learned from the development of expansions for both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, Sasko explained the team's refined approach to quest design. This involves structuring gameplay into focused segments of approximately 40 minutes, each packed with intense, thematic content, followed by periods where players can freely explore the game world. He did note exceptions to this rule, such as in climactic finales or specific intense sequences like the "Somewhat Damaged" quest in Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty expansion, where the intention is to keep the player immersed and feeling the weight of the situation without a break.

Despite his critiques, Sasko and CD Projekt Red's work on The Witcher 3 remains a landmark achievement in narrative storytelling and quest design in video games. The upcoming DLC, "Songs of the Past," faces the challenge of creating content that is as memorable as the acclaimed quests from their earlier title.
