Wizards of the Coast has postponed the Magic: The Gathering x Monster Hunter Secret Lair Superdrop, citing player disappointment with the initial designs. The company has committed to reworking the entire release.
In a blog post, Wizards of the Coast acknowledged that the collaboration "fell short of expectations." The publisher stated, "We heard loud and clear that you were disappointed, and we believe we can do better. So, we're going to postpone this release and rework this Superdrop entirely." Capcom is reportedly on board with the revision, with further information promised for 2026. As of September, however, there have been no further updates regarding the revised release.
The original Secret Lair x Monster Hunter Superdrop was intended to feature a collection of cards themed around the popular action RPG franchise. The planned sets, "The Hunt," "The Hunters," "The Monsters," and "The Monsters II," included reprints of existing Magic: The Gathering cards with new art and names referencing iconic monsters, weapons, and armor from the Monster Hunter series. Examples included Blind Obedience themed as Malzeno from Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, and Nezahal, Primal Tide representing Lagiacrus from Monster Hunter 3.
Critics pointed out that many of the cards were common reprints with minimal value, and some even contained typos. The overall sentiment was that the collaboration felt rushed and did not live up to the potential of the crossover. A major point of hope for some players, particularly Commander enthusiasts, was the potential for a reprint of Ur-Dragon, a powerful five-color creature, to facilitate a cohesive Monster Hunter-themed deck. The exact contents of the reworked Superdrop remain unknown.
