The Disney+ series Wonder Man has been unexpectedly canceled, despite having a second season confirmed earlier this year. Showrunner Andrew Guest shared his bewilderment regarding the decision in a TikTok video, stating that pre-production for the second season was slated to begin this month. Guest clarified that the cancellation was not a marketing stunt, nor was it related to any upcoming movie or scheduling conflicts for the cast or crew.

"This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works, and Destin’s schedule, and no one’s schedule, was an issue… There was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did," Guest explained. He indicated that contracts had been signed, schedules were aligned, and the writing staff was preparing to convene shortly.

Guest noted that Disney did not share specific performance metrics for the show, though fans reportedly considered it one of the stronger Marvel mini-series, with its popularity keeping it on Disney+'s most-watched list for several weeks. The greenlighting of a second season was seen as strong confirmation of its success.

Wonder Man followed Simon Williams, a struggling actor who lands a role in a superhero film. He is mentored by Trevor Slattery, a character previously seen in Iron Man 3. Williams secretly possesses superpowers but is more interested in acting than practicing vigilantism. The series premiered on Disney+ in January and received a second season order by March, earning praise for its idiosyncratic take on the character.

The cancellation comes amid a period of reported disarray at Marvel Studios, marked by layoffs and less-than-stellar box office returns since Endgame. Other projects, such as Mahershala Ali's Blade film, have also faced significant changes. This shift suggests a potential reevaluation of Marvel's strategy for adapting lesser-known comic characters into major stars.

Despite the disappointment, Guest expressed hope for rallying industry peers to support Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his performance in the series.
