Joseph Zada, set to portray a younger Haymitch Abernathy in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, received a unique piece of acting advice from Woody Harrelson, who originated the role. Harrelson suggested Zada watch the 1967 Paul Newman film Cool Hand Luke.
"He said that everything that he's ever done, he's trying to do that," Zada explained, referring to Harrelson's guidance. The veteran actor, who will also reprise his role as the older Haymitch in the upcoming film, had opportunities to connect with Zada on set. Their interactions largely involved sharing stories, with Harrelson expressing interest in Zada's experience.
This approach suggests Harrelson offered broader career advice rather than specific character direction, potentially allowing Zada to bring his own interpretation to the younger Haymitch. This aligns with the broader casting approach for Sunrise on the Reaping.
A New Take on Familiar Roles
Director Francis Lawrence has encouraged the cast to develop their own interpretations of established characters. Kelvin Harrison Jr., playing a young Beetee, was reportedly told by Lawrence, "We're not doing impressions and stuff like that. So I really want you to do your own thing." Despite this, Harrison Jr. aimed to ensure his portrayal felt familiar to fans.
Similarly, Elle Fanning, who steps into the role of Effie Trinket previously played by Elizabeth Banks, aimed to honor the original performance while forging her own path. Fanning shared that Banks encouraged her to "make Effie my own," but she incorporated nods to Banks's portrayal, including in costume design and by improvising lines.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled for release in theaters on November 20.
