World of Warcraft: Classic Players Gain RP-PvP Server Option

World of Warcraft: Classic is adding a fourth server ruleset: role-playing player versus player (RP-PvP). Blizzard announced the new option on social media, with name reservations scheduled to begin on October 27.

The RP-PvP server joins existing options for PvE, PvP, and role-playing. A Hardcore (permadeath) ruleset is also slated for release before Spring 2027. The addition of RP-PvP is a direct response to vocal community requests, as this ruleset has been a feature in previous iterations of World of Warcraft Classic.

This new server option carries added significance due to Blizzard's server structure for Classic, which consolidates players into largely singular servers per ruleset. Previously, this meant only one PvP server was available, drawing a large concentration of streamers and their audiences. This concentration has led to concerns among some players who wish to avoid potential disruptions from large streamer guilds and their followers, particularly those looking for a PvP experience without the added element of role-playing.

The addition of an RP-PvP server provides an alternative for these players, albeit with role-playing stipulations. Blizzard had previously expressed reservations about introducing an RP-PvP server. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield noted in a podcast that while players fondly recall servers like Grobbulus from 2019, subsequent RP-PvP realms have not always maintained player populations. Greenfield cited the smaller size of the role-playing community compared to standard and PvP communities, and the need for a "critical mass" of players to support social interaction and a healthy economy within Blizzard's new "realmless" system. Splitting an already niche community was a significant consideration.

GameSpot has reached out to Blizzard for comment on the shift in plans but has not yet received a response.

World of Warcraft: Classic is set to launch on November 4. In the lead-up to its release, Blizzard has continued to share details about the game, including the return of a questing tradition in the Riverglades zone and adjustments to racial abilities. The developer has also discussed its approach to the game's endgame and future content in recent interviews.
