World of Warcraft: Forever has officially added the "Kyle's Gone Missing!" quest, a beloved piece of the game's history originally introduced during The Burning Crusade expansion. This addition comes as a significant departure from the server's focus on preserving the vanilla WoW experience, but addresses player requests to include this specific quest.
The "Kyle's Gone Missing!" quest was first implemented in June 2007 via patch 2.1.2 as part of a Make-a-Wish campaign for Ezra Chatterton, a young player battling brain cancer. Chatterton, who played under the in-game name Ephoenix, voiced the quest-giver Ahab Wheathoof and had his dog, Kyle, featured in the game. Players were tasked with finding Kyle in the Tauren starting zone of Mulgore. Sadly, Ezra Chatterton passed away in October 2008 at the age of 12. The quest has remained a touching memorial within the game, and Blizzard has honored him in other ways, such as renaming an NPC in Wrath of the Lich King after him.
As the quest was introduced after the original vanilla version of World of Warcraft, it was not initially included in WoW: Forever. However, player feedback, including a forum post from user Nyaria highlighting the absence of the quest and its significance, prompted Blizzard to reconsider. Nyaria noted that while the quest was not part of vanilla, WoW: Forever already included custom content, making it a suitable place for this particular addition.
Blizzard community manager Kaivax responded to the player's request, stating, "We're working on it. Stay tuned." This confirmation led to an outpouring of gratitude from the community. A player named Ikory shared a powerful personal story, detailing their own experience as a Make-a-Wish recipient who survived a serious illness and expressed thanks to Blizzard for continuing to support Make-a-Wish kids.
Just four days after the community discussion, the quest was implemented in the World of Warcraft: Forever beta as part of the October 1 patch. Johnny Cash, Principal Designer at Blizzard, shared on X that he had the honor of bringing the quest into WoW: Forever, reflecting on the emotional experience of adding the quest created by Ezra Chatterton.
The quest is accessible early for players, particularly Tauren characters, starting at level 5 in Bloodhoof Village. The objective involves hunting plainstriders for Tender Strider Meat to lure Kyle back home. This inclusion highlights Blizzard's willingness to incorporate cherished elements of WoW's past into WoW: Forever, balancing its commitment to the vanilla experience with the desire to preserve meaningful content and moments in the game's history.
