Blizzard Entertainment has announced World of Warcraft: Forever, an upcoming iteration of the classic WoW experience, set to launch on November 4. A key feature of this new offering is the addition of over 1,000 new quests, significantly expanding the game's content.
Senior game designer Josh Greenfield explained that while the exact total number of quests in WoW is complex to quantify due to different quest types, the game currently features approximately 3,000 to 3,500 "actual playable quests." The addition of more than 1,000 new quests represents a substantial increase for players seeking new adventures.
These new quests will be distributed across four new zones, each offering between 50 and 200 quests. Furthermore, existing zones, notably the Wetlands and Azshara, have received significant updates with new questlines to enhance their scope and engagement. "Every nook and cranny, you're going to find something, even from like level five... onward, you're going to start seeing new stuff," Greenfield stated.
Blizzard drew inspiration from the original WoW's iconic quests for the new content. Greenfield highlighted that many early quests explored the world at a "ground level," telling relatable stories that allowed players to feel like everyday heroes on an adventure. He cited examples like "The Missing Diplomat" as quests that fostered exploration and learning about the game's diverse cultures and mysteries. Blizzard intends to "help finish unraveling" some of these older mysteries in WoW Forever.
The design philosophy for the new quests embraces the darker, grimmer tones found in some of the original WoW's content. Greenfield mentioned that even seemingly bright locations, like Zephyr Isle, can hide complex and somber narratives. "It's not all, you know, sunshine and rainbows up there. It can be a little little hard," he noted.
In addition to the new quests and zones, WoW Forever will introduce updated class designs, revamped systems, visual and gameplay enhancements, and an expanded selection of race and class options. The update will be accessible through the existing World of Warcraft subscription.
For players looking to further invest, the $80 Warcraft Forever Collection is available. This package includes access to the new Skyborne race, beta access, and early name reservation for WoW Forever. The collection also bundles Warcraft III: Reforged and its expansion, The Frozen Throne.
