World of Warcraft: Forever Aims to Redefine Classic With Ambitious New Content

Blizzard is embarking on an ambitious endeavor with World of Warcraft: Forever, the third major iteration of its seminal MMORPG, set to launch on November 4. Drawing on 22 years of development history and player feedback from previous Classic releases, Forever aims to move beyond simple replication of the past and forge a new path for the game.

Pushing the Envelope at Launch

Associate Production Director Clay Stone explained that the team's goal was to "push the envelope" and exceed player expectations from the outset. Rather than merely implementing minor balance changes or completing unfinished original quests, Blizzard has introduced over 1,000 new quests, four new zones, thousands of new items, significant class revisions, and new gameplay systems. A notable addition is the Skyborne elves, a playable race exclusive to Forever.

"I think that it was important for us to do this up front, to basically not have everything feel like, 'Oh, I predicted that …' and do that now rather than not do that and wait five years down the line," Stone said. This approach, he believes, sets the game up for better long-term health and allows for future surprises. While some initially planned additions were scaled back due to development timelines and the looming BlizzCon 2026 announcement, Stone teased that more race and class combinations, along with more significant class changes akin to WoW Classic's Season of Discovery, are planned for post-launch.

The Undead Paladin is highlighted as one of Forever's most anticipated new race/class combinations. Blizzard is intentionally holding back some content, with a roadmap extending through Summer 2027 that includes new raids, dungeons, quests, and the launch of a Hardcore permadeath server.

A New Vision for Azeroth

Regarding the game's world, Stone affirmed that the team is committed to "staying on Azeroth." While new zones will be introduced, the focus remains on exploring existing areas of the world map in new ways. "I think that the creative constraint of telling ourselves we're going to stay on Azeroth has created some really cool and interesting creative opportunities for us to explore some places that perhaps players have seen before, and perhaps some places that they haven't seen before," he noted.

The game's monetization model is also being tested. Forever is included with the standard $15 monthly World of Warcraft subscription. However, Blizzard is charging $30 for the new Skyborne elves race. Executive Producer and VP for WoW Holly Longdale described this as an experiment to "support the team and support the business" without creating "unnecessary barriers." This model is not necessarily indicative of future monetization strategies but is a current test to gauge player reception.

Launch is Only the Beginning

Even with the launch date approaching, many details about Forever's endgame remain under wraps. Players in the beta have only reached level 30, and numerous items are still undiscovered. Endgame raids are slated to unlock on December 9, a month after launch, but their specific content and rewards are a mystery. The development team aims for a more compact power progression between raid tiers compared to earlier iterations of WoW Classic, while still making new raids feel rewarding.

Stone expressed a desire to continue the tradition of finding powerful, best-in-slot items from various sources, including dungeons and the open world. The new Legacy system, an account-wide progression tree, is intended to make it feel like it's "never too late to start this game or to rejoin if you've stepped away for a bit."

The game's new camping system is designed to encourage player socialization and provide buffs. Lore-wise, Forever draws inspiration from the recently released Warcraft 3: Reforged's Forsaken Kingdom campaign, tying its narrative to the creation of the Undercity and the first Forsaken Paladin.

World of Warcraft: Forever is scheduled to launch on November 4, accessible via a monthly subscription. Its beta will run until October 21. The game is bundled with Warcraft 3: Reforged's Forsaken Kingdom campaign in the $60 Skyborne Epic Pack or the $80 WoW: Forever Collection.
